The Mighty iPod

I've been loving my Valentine's Day ipod so much that we got Ed a nano for Father's Day. Give him something to listen to on his commute - expose him to some good music that's not a movie soundtrack (he is so musically deprived it's amazing we ever hooked up), maybe some audio books. Before packing up the computer I loaded him up with some good stuff including the most recent session of General Conference, downloaded from the Church website. I saw you can subscribe to Conference as a podcast, and it occurred to me I have never looked into podcasts. So I took a gander - you know, important stuff to do before moving day - and poked around the podcast directory. There's certainly more than I can ever look through, much less listen to, so I appeal to those more experienced. What podcasts do you like and why?

Someday I may even figure out movies and audio books.

If you're taking your iPod down the podcast route, might I suggest a few NPR favorites? First, there's "Wait Wait Don't Tell Me," the weekly news quiz show...it's hilarious! And don't forget "CarTalk." Also very funny. And though it's on my list of Things To Get Addicted To, I haven't actually listened to this one yet, but I'm told that "This American Life" is fabulous.

Man, I'm making myself really wish I had an iPod! Hmm....it's almost July, so Christmas is just around the corner, right? ;)

Hope all is going well for you en route and in Virginia!

I spent weeks listening to all the interviews. Fascinating stuff. Some of it not for the faint of heart though.

My brother always tells me to listen to those same three NPR shows that Lindsay mentioned (at least I think those are the ones) but I haven't figured out podcasts yet...

I'm so excited! iPod is life for me. I have a very large selection of audio books and movies for my iPod. about 35 gigs of music, a full terabyte of movies and nearly 200 gigs of audio books if you ever want to swap. Podcasts, I have the ensign, I find it better than the general conference downloads because the ensign podcast broke it down to individual talks so you don't have to fast forward through all the singing and prayers to get to the talk. I have a couple other byu devotional podcasts. Outside of church stuff, I enjoy the discovery channel and history channel video podcasts, and a little of comedy centrals stand up video podcast which I have found to be mostly clean and they are all free.

The next step is the apple tv. Camille got me one for Christmas last year and being able to surf youtube on the living room tv is way too cool.

Let me know if you're interested and I can send you a list of my music, audio books & movie inventory.

Don't know your friend kingfoote Kari but reading her comment made me say "WOW" and i have to pick my jaws up....hahahaha....BIG THANKS!!! did you know that my ipod has been sitting inside my keepsake box for over a year now, got it as a birthday present from Alan and the girls last year and both Alan and I just didn't know how to use it [well, maybe except for the couple of songs from Michael Buble, Time out for women that Josh eagar taught Alan how to download but forgot the entire instructions already]. I don't have patience with that and i just couldn't find the time to learn how to do that but reading your friend's comment that it truly is Life for her....i would love to be imparted of good talks and music anytime anywhere so i better get a computer geek to help me!

But i guess i need to get somebody to educate me what a "gigs", "terabyte", "gigabyte" is...hahahaha...now i feel like i'm truly a caveman...can i just share my testimony about the Book of Mormon and let's forget about this entire "gigs" thing?....j/k

Cherry,

Here is a quick, brief breakdown just for you (by the way, kingfoote is a boy)

The average song in MP3 format is 3 to 5 megabytes. There are 1,000 megabytes in a gigabyte, and there are 1,000 gigabytes in a terabyte. Sort of like metric.

I definitely think you should get your iPod out of your keepsake box. There is so much you can do with your iPod these days. I try to listen to an ensign article about every other day on my way to work, and I have my computer set to automatically delete the ones I've already listened to and put the new ones on every time I plug in my iPod.

I hope that helps a little.

I can plug This American Life. Dave is a huge fan and has about 100 downloaded (my estimate, not his). We listen to them when we are on big road trips sometimes. One fascinating one was on teenage girls and a tv game show that was developed for them. They had to dumb the game down because the girls wouldn't/couldn't answer hard questions - it isn't cool to be a smart girl. Very interesting and sparked a great discussion on how to teach Hilde that being smart IS cool.

Big help Kingfoote!

The iPod box says 4GB 1000songs PC + Mac--don't really know what it means though i understand i can download up to 1000 songs BUT Thanks a lot and thanks to kari's blogsite too, what a helpful site to visit for info you might be needing.

This is also one helpful way to keep the Sabbath Day holy(listening to general conference talks) when i have to work on a week-end..keeps me awake too(i'm a nurse and work night shifts in a hospital).

I hope to read more, it's fun exchanging ideas here, feels so homey!

Sincerely,
cherry
