I am Disco Mom. I have three daughters and a red-haired husband, and I love it when we are all together. My current work is to keep us all healthy, safe, generally happy, and headed in the right direction, individually and as a family. I am devoted to this work, but have a long way to go.
I'm a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. We are Christians; the center of our faith and spiritual life is the atonement and resurrection of Jesus Christ, and we strive to understand and know Him better. Commonly known as Mormons, we share fundamental beliefs with other Christian faiths, such as that the Bible is the word of God, He hears and answers our prayers, and there is divine purpose in our lives on earth, among others. We also have some unique beliefs and practices based on more modern revelation. If you ever have questions about the Church, you should ask me, or another church member you know, and not necessarily believe what you read or hear elsewhere. Those who live it know it best.
In my former life, I worked as a speech-language pathologist in early intervention, elementary, and middle schools. I was as surprised as anyone to realize 6th and 7th graders were my favorite to work with! Although I haven't worked professionally for several years, I keep my credentials current, so I have the option to return to work if I need or want to. Sometimes it just feels good to sign my name, "Kari Hickman, M.A., CCC-SLP."
In my life way before that, as a teenager when I really became ME, I loved alternative/mod/retro/vintage STUFF, mostly clothes and music. I had an enviable album collection for awhile, and loved my lava lamp and liquid eyeliner. That's where the "Disco" part of my blog title hearkens from. I do in fact own a disco ball, complete with spotlight and colored filters, but it is currently packed away in a closet, along with the rest of my past.
These days, I wear whatever black t-shirt and baggy pants happen to be at hand. Birkenstocks support my high arches year round. A ripped backpack serves as diaper bag/purse. I'm always desperate for new music, though I rarely have time to listen to it. My days are long, busy, and mostly happy.
And, oh yeah, I like to bake.
