Things I Won't Miss #3: Window Air Conditioners

I guess I should be thankful we have anything. Two years ago there was a major power outage in Queens in the middle of summer and hundreds of thousands of people and businesses were without electricity for 2 weeks. Even so, I'm a spoiled brat and like my central a/c in hot and humid weather. But I've put up with window units ever since we got married seven years ago and I'm done.

First, they're loud. We tried to watch a movie the other night and had to turn it all the way up to hear over the a/c. But Ginger sleeps on the other side of that wall and it woke her up. Bummer. The white noise is nice to sleep to, though, if your husband would only leave it on all night.

Second, they're inefficient. When you "install" one in a rental place you can't make it very permanent so we jimmy-rig all kinds of foam, wood, cardboard, rags and towels around them to try to make them tight, but there are always holes and leaks.

Third, they distribute poorly. Even with the right size a/c for a large room, and a big standing fan in front blowing the air around, it only feels cool nearby. Other than that it just takes the edge off but the backs of my knees are still sweaty, and I hate that.

Fourth, and this is the real reason this is on my mind today besides that our temps went up 30 degrees in the last 2 days here - it's especially frustrating when your husband, who sleeps closer to the unit, puts the a/c on a 4-hour timer before bed, thinking you won't notice and wake up at 3am drenched in sweat and gasping for air, so disoriented from sleep and heat you can't figure out why you feel like you're suffocating.

I'm looking ever so forward to central air (and double checking it before we go to bed.)

I know the feeling, we don't have central A/C here in Reno where it gets up to 107 in June/July/August! I am soooo looking forward to central air when we move in Late July. We have a window unit in the Family room and we have fans in our bedrooms. We rent so we didn't want to invest too much in units knowing the end was near! I never want to live without A/C again after we move!!

Our apartment doesn't have any sort of AC -- window unit or central. After a lot of back and forth we decided that we're going to just stick with fans this summer to keep cool. Maybe we're totally crazy, but for many reasons, some of which you listed (and others, like investing several hundred dollars in window units that we won't want to turn on for fear of what our electricity bill will look like if we did), we've decided to see how long we can last. I almost caved in this afternoon, but since there's not much you can do about it on a Sunday, I've decided to try to stick with the original choice. We'll see how long we all last before we melt into miserable, sweaty puddles. Cross your fingers for us! :)

(PS: I have a few more nursery shots of Hazel. Let me know if you want me to send them.)

You're killing me. Please, for the good of Garrett, take one or more of ours when we leave. I know it hurts the electric bill but I'm begging you to save yourselves. We have 3, and we were either going to sell them on Craigslist or just leave them for the next tenants because if we sell them that means we have to be without them for a few nights and I can't do it. Please take them, I can't stand the thought of you trying to sleep or cook or live in this, and trust me it will get worse!

Ahhhh AC. I am happy for you that you will have the convenience of central air in your new place.

Aaron is crying in sympathy for you. He will turn the air conditioning to like 55. It's freaking freezing!!! So I turn it off and am comfortable until I get pushed out off bed by an insensibly sweaty companion. In the middle of the night he's woken me up yelling "Stay away from me! Don't touch me! It's too hot!!"

Congratulations on the 15 pound milestone. You inspired me to go running Friday and today, so see, you are making a difference.

Dave is with you on the AC thing. He gets really hot, and I put out a ton of heat when I sleep. It is in the High family genes, when all of us were together a few years ago one of the other in-laws said that one my siblings was so hot at night they were considering sleeping in the next room. Dave and the other in-laws immediately chimed in to echo the sentiment. And when I am pregnant, you have a HOT woman sleeping next to you. But it almost never bothers me. We don't have, and don't need AC here, but if we were back in VA and without it, Dave might kill me in my sleep just to cool off!
