Snapshot

Today, 3:23pm. Hazel has just come in from playing outside in the snow. She's sitting at the counter eating a chocolate chip cookie warm from the oven. (I'm the best Mom ever.)

"Mom, I made snow angels outside."

"I know, I saw. What else did you do?"

"Well, there was something strange. I saw something strange in the bushes that's red and I don't know what it was. But it can't be E.T.'s heart because it was not glowing."

Phew
. E.T.'s heart is not in our bushes.

Wow - have your kids actually seen E.T.? I think my kids would freak out.

Dude, that movie terrified me. I still can't eat Reeses pieces. So I'm very happy to hear you didn't have his heart stuck in your yard.

I know, I know.

Backstory: I would never show E.T. to my kids who are scared of everything. But Ed has a different outlook, which is "Who cares?" So he was flipping channels one Saturday and found E.T. and watched it and the girls were horrified/fascinated and kept running from the room screaming but also running back. I told him to turn it off, told him they would have nightmares, but he said he'd handle it. After that for about a week there was a constant barrage of questions about every little thing. I answered a few basics but deferred almost all questions to Ed as a sign of my disapproval. Next time we were at the library Ginger found the movie so we borrowed it and I made Ed watch it with them (really just Ginger; Hazel checked herself out of the torture) and pause and explain and answer every single question. So they are somewhat over the terror and have really become quite the experts on E.T. Of course their favorite part is when he goes home and there's a rainbow in the sky at the very end.

I still have not seen ET all the way through because of my traumatic childhood experience with the film. As I recall, I freaked out when the men in spacesuits came to take him and we all had to leave the theatre early. And I also recall that to calm me back down I was given a cherry Hostess Fruit Pie. Which is why, to this day, I occasionally buy and eat a cherry Hostess Fruit Pie even though they are disgusting.

Did Hazel happen to say whether it was E.T.'s glowing finger in the bushes?

Dave: as I recall, it was just ME who had to leave the theater with you. For some reason, I think Mom sent us to see it all by ourselves and Tona didn't want to take you out. And that cherry pie thing sounds believable because that was one of my favorite treats to buy after ballet class. I'm sure I got you one because I'm so nice.

Last summer they were showing ET outdoors in Rosslyn and Q took the girls but they left early. It was both scary and contained inappropriate language (not to mention poor social examples). Sonja didn't like it. Some of those shows we loved as kids were really not designed with kids' best interests at heart.

That said, I've been in your shoes when Q thinks something is ok but I don't. Stinks.

D - She didn't mention the finger. I don't want to bring it up.

D&M - That's funny. My memory is that Maren and Tona made ME take you out all by myself because they wanted to watch the movie. So I never got to see the end (until recently.) Huh. I've held a grudge all this time. I don't remember a cherry pie. I wonder what really happened.
