Expecting Someone?

I am. Or, to be politically correct, we are.

That's right, sports fans, we're switching to zone defense. Little Hickman #3 will be joining us around - or hopefully before - the end of April.

Which should explain an entire month of no blog posts in September and October, when any free moment I had was spent lying down, and the idea of sitting in front of the computer forming rational thoughts was abhorrent. The last two months are pretty much a blur of survival, fatigue, nausea, seltzer, and Blow-Pops but since I know so many others that have had it worse, that's all I'll say about that. Except that I've been going to bed early and only re-reading favorite books - I just can't spare the focus required to follow something new.

But crossing into the second trimester has cleared my mind a bit. Enough to enjoy food smells again - sometimes -, to think about the nursery and to start a baby registry on Amazon. You'd think by a third baby a family would have all they need. But you would be wrong, very wrong.

Around New Year's we can find out what kind of kiddo we've got in there. No question - I want to know what I'm dealing with, and do as much planning and preparing as possible before the little bundle of screaming disoriented nerves arrives, and the work starts all over again. Besides, finding out at the end if the ultrasound was actually correct is almost as surprising as not having one.

It's also never too early to think about names. If you know me well, you know that I consider naming one of the main reasons to have kids in the first place. If it's a girl, she's all set. I've got a couple of great ones that have been waiting in the wings for just the right time. If it's a boy, he's also all set. The Boy List has been whittled and honed with each pregnancy, and any of the top three or four contenders would make a boy - and his Mom - proud.

In the meantime, for the next few months it shall be known as...Superfly. I heard it in a song on the radio one night when I was having profound thoughts about the baby. I knew it would never pass a committee vote as an actual name, but gestational nicknames don't even go to vote, so it's set.

We told the girls the other morning and they already have their own ideas about names, needs, and how they will "help." I will have to do another post on the girls' names; they're awesome in a cute-but-we-would-never-actually-use-them way. Hazel has decided her job will be to hold the baby as much as possible, and Ginger would like to tickle it and put the bath toys in.

You can probably expect several pregnancy and baby related posts in the upcoming months; I've got a few composing themselves in the old noggin, but I promise not to obsess. Lots of other stuff going on, too, to write about. I just wanted to officially announce. And although I know as well or better than anyone how hard, uncomfortable, exhausting, inconvenient, and sometimes embarrassing pregnancy, birth and new babies can be, I am deeply thrilled in a way that is impossible to explain, to have another one. I feel like the luckiest girl in the world.

A hearty congratulations! This is happy news! I, too, was thrilled about my baby #3; now that baby #3 - a/k/a Sarah Beth - is nearly 5, I'm still thrilled about her. I wish you a happy, healthy & complication-free pregnancy...and I look forward to reading your blog posts about it. ~Heidi

Congratulations! I am so excited for you and your family! Believe me I get how easy it is to still need things with the third. We had one of each so we were set either way right? Wrong. I can't wait to find out what you are having :) I love that you are calling the babe Superfly.

Congratulations! We are super excited for you and having just made the jump to three ourselves, know that you can do it. Our third is fantastic and we wouldn't go back to 2 for all the world. And most importantly for now, congratulations on making it through the worst of the sickness.

Thrilled for you, of course! Enjoy mastering the zone defense, instead of man to man. :) You and Ed will do great!

Congrats on being soon to be outnumbered. My youngest sister got dubbed algae in the womb since she was little and grew in water. It started to really stick and my mom kind of panicked and put the kibosh on it. But she ended up with a real name that was pretty similar. Hope you feel better soon!

I wondered--congratulations. Lily kept suggesting we name brother #2 the same name as brother #1, because that would make it "easier;" we could just call "Peter" and all the boys would come!

HOORAY! We continue to be right along the same gestational track. Why didn't you TELL me last Saturday???

I'm so thrilled about Hickman baby #3! Hurrah for babies, and I can't wait to hear gender and name news!

Marie - uh, yes, it was funny, I wasn't sure what to say. We were waiting one more week to tell people and I didn't want to steal your thunder, but at the same time I felt a little like I was lying not saying anything. Oh well, you know now and yes, we mysteriously continue to time things the same. Yay for second cousins!

That is so exciting!

I am very surprised Marie didn't mention Emma's pre-birth name: Fanny Dorkus.

When that baby was born, it took me three weeks of very conscious substituting to say "Emma."

Congratulations on such wonderful news. On Friday Ginger said to me, "My mommy has a baby in her tummy just like you (Myla was in the baby bjorn) and I am going to help so much!" I was waiting for the official announcement--Yay!!!

Ashley - hilarious. Naturally we knew telling the kids is the same as announcing it to the world from a loudspeaker, only cuter, so we only told them when it was OK for anyone to know.

So thrilled for you Kari! It seems like we are always neck and neck on who will deliver first. My doc has me due on May 7th, but usually induces me a week or so early. As I read your post, I just smiled, knowing full well what you are experiencing, as I am in the same stage. I'm just feeling well enough to start blogging again, but am semi-overwhelmed by the amount of posts I've already missed out on writing. Oh well... Good luck and "may the Schwartz be with you", lol. (I hope you remember that...or that just sounded so lame.)

Jen - awesome, congratulations! My due date is May 6 but I'll have a c-section and with Ginger they did it 2 weeks before my due date, but it's a different doctor now so not sure.

Kari,

I am soooo happy for you because I know this is something you have wanted for some time. We are having our 4th in about 6-7 weeks. We are even now with 2 boys and now our second girl. Hope you feel well. I think you are a superb writer and I enjoyed the purge that was your twilight experience.
